Completed August 2002

This quilt was made using a technique called “Bargello.” A Bargello quilt is constructed by first sewing horizontal strips of fabric together to form a color run. The next step is cutting vertical strips from the color run, shifting them, and sewing them back together. I chose a rainbow fabric to construct this quilt. The fabric was striped already, so it saved me the first step of sewing twenty strips together. I also was able to practice the "quilt as you go" method before trying a big project. As you can tell, the quilt turned out a bit slanted, demonstrating the need for a walking foot on my machine!

The curve of a Bargello quilt is created by strategically choosing varying widths of vertical strips and shifting consecutive strips up or down. Being a mathematician, the curve I chose to emulate in this quilt is a sine wave.

Whenever I see a rainbow, I remember Genesis 9:12-15. . .

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.”

Once I completed this quilt I decided to give it to my boss, Mrs. Harris. Whenever I was worried or stressed she would remind me that God had called me to this time and place and had equipped me to do the work at hand. She was my rainbow -- a reminder of God's promises!
