| This is my first flannel rag quilt, inspired by "Chill Chasers" in Quiltmaker's March/April '06 issue. |

I modified the pattern slightly. I cut 8" squares instead of 8.5" squares. I was guaranteed to get 5 squares across the width of the flannel this way and save fabric. I also chose not to use batting or an extra layer of flannel in the middle. For Florida, two layers of flannel is plenty warm! Instead of doing a generic swirl as suggested in the pattern, I tried my hand at free-motion quilting a butterfly in each block. Carlin scanned the flannel, drew an outline of a butterfly, and sized it so it would fit perfectly. I used a blue marking pen to trace the motif on all of the squares cut from the butterfly fabric. Pairing up a butterfly print with a marble print, I sewed them together, using thread that matched the marble. Once all the blocks were completed, I pieced the quilt (using a 3/4" seam allowance) such that the front and back had a similar checkerboard look, and began snipping. After snipping every 1/4 inch around every block, the quilt was washed and dried to start the fraying process. |

I had the pleasure of constructing this quilt on a girls getaway weekend. It was fun to come home and present Annaliese with a new quilt!
