I was commissioned by the Lee children to make this family tree quilt for their parents as a Christmas gift. John and Carolyn Lee have five children, each married, and seven grandchildren (another on the way). We wanted to include the names of every family member, so my task was to design a quilt for this purpose.

The design I settled on was inspired by "Family Gathering Tree" by Christine Thresh, found on the internet. It is a Log Cabin quilt set on point. I had fun making sure the blocks had a random look to them and was quite proud that each block was unique!

Each family mailed their signatures to me, which I transferred to the center squares with a light box and permanent fabric marker. The top block included both parents:

The rest of the blocks were for each member of the family. The center squares were colored to signify family groupings. I also included birth dates and wedding dates on the blocks.

The quilting was also done by machine, primarily free-motion quilting. In each of the tree blocks I used a leaf motif, for the trunk I used lines and swirls, and in the border I wrote "Lee" five times on each side:

The quilt was given to the Lees during their family Christmas celebration. It was an honor to be a part of this future heirloom!
